Fiona Starr
Born in 1960 in Leeds. Fiona studied at the Jacob Kramer College of Art (Leeds) and at Stourbridge College of Art where she gained a degree in Fine Art.
Her paintings are fundamentally inspired by colour and the desire to make paint express her fleeting memories of landscapes, her surroundings and the vital, living feelings and emotions that those colours create within her. They combine the recognisable with abstract imagery, and explore many different themes. Working intuitively with colour and shape, her original compositions are constantly being modified until the painting has absorbed the feelings she wishes to convey.
In her abstract work, she is greatly interested in the idea of raw, barelytouched canvas breaking through to create pockets of light, or luminous colour that is encased or blocked in by opaque textured paint.
Fiona works mainly in acrylics, starting with base coats of luminous colour, keeping pockets of barely touched canvas to contrast with more opaque layers of colour. It is as if she like to leave a journey or pathway through the painting to the original canvas black.
