Mike Jones

Born in Wales, Mike embarked on a teaching career in 1974 after graduating with a first-class honours degree. He retired from teaching in 2006 after 32 years in the classroom from his post as Head of Art at Lancaster Royal Grammar School to devote himself to full-time painting.

Mike's paintings relate strongly to the experience of being in the landscape and he admires the "painterly" qualities to be found in the work of Turner, Monet and Pisarro.

As well as being about places and experiences, they are about the paint itself so that the paint forms an equivalence with the subject matter. He enjoys working with acrylic paints which dry quickly enabling him to  build up rich and intriguing layers and marks as well as allowing him to retain freshness and vibrancy in his work.
