Stephen Lennon
Born in 1953 in the cotton town of Burnley, Lancashire, Stephen Lennon started his love affair with paint as a boy after his father bought him his first set of oil paints.
The dramatic skies, hills, moors and fells are the inspiration behind his work. he records the changing light and seasons of his surroundings, from the wild and mysterious Bronte country the the mountains of the Lake District and from the soft rolling limestone Yorkshire Dales to the rugged Pennine Moorland.
He aims to convey a sense of place, not only in the physical dimension bu also in the feeling of space and clear air between the viewer and the subject. he translates the natural harmony of shape and colour of the landscape, using the transparancy of watercolour, often mixing it with other paque media to achieve the effect he seeks.
He represents topographical features as simply as possible, often using map like shapes and lines to simplify the natural features into the essential elements needed to capture the spirit of the place as it is on the day, and in the weather and light of the moment.
Stephen is a member of the British Watercolour Society, the Yorkshire Watercolour Society and the Leeds Fine Arts Club. Since his first one man show in 1988 he has enjoyed increasing success and has exhibited throughout Britain and the USA, winning prizes and commissions as his reputation has grown.
